It’s an age old question — MP3 versus .wav – which is the best suitable audio file format to use when editing?
Whether you are using Adobe Audition or not, it is indeed imperative
to be familiar with the appropriate type of file to when you are
editing. But then of course it depends on the application or the nature
of the editing project. We will get deeper into this subject as we
answer this question which was also emailed to us by one of our avid
readers here at www.radiosound.co.nr.
Ikino is a radio personnel at a station in Bangladesh. He emailed on
the subject “Is there a difference if I use mp3 files against .wav
files when editing on Adobe Audition?”. Ikino stressed out difference
points but let’s go first to his main concern which is determining the
right format when editing.
The rule of thumb when you are editing audio files is to always work
with non-compressed raw files – that means the .wav format. Whatever
project it is, whether you are remixing a song or editing a voiceover
for a video presentation, it is always safe to use and work with files
that end with the .wav extension.
Ikino asked us if there is any difference? Yes there is a big
difference especially when it comes to the quality of the output.
Remember that every time an audio file is compressed its quality is
also being reduced. Now consider what would happen if you work with raw
audio files that are already being compressed. For example, if your
project involves putting a music bed or background to a raw voiceover
for a video narration and your voiceover file is in mp3 format, the
result would not be as good if your voiceover was in .wav. Every time
you save the changes, the quality of the VO gets lesser and lesser.
This does not only apply to mp3 files, but also with other
compression approaches such as Window’s .wma format. Some producers
would even mistakenly consider .wma and .wav as the same.
